Lead magnets have recently taken over the marketing community, and for good reason. Lead magnets are an effective (and FREE) way to not only create interest, but to also begin a relationship with potential customers.

What Exactly Is It

A lead magnet is a piece of content you have created to give to your target audience in exchange for their contact information.

Example: If you’ve ever taken a quiz online and the only way to get the results was to input your email address – that’s a lead magnet.

The goal of a lead magnet is to exchange invaluable information while also beginning a relationship with them. This allows you to demonstrate your knowledge in your field, and helps the potential customer feel more comfortable with interacting (and hopefully buying) from you.

Examples

Lead magnets come in various forms, all depending on the type of person you are trying to attract. Interactive quizzes, printable templates, and webinars are just a few examples of lead magnets you can create.

How To Create One

The first step to creating an effective lead magnet is to truly understand your target audience. The better you know your target audience, the more likely you are to create something that they are actually interested in and willing to give their information for.

Pro tip: Segmenting your audience will help you be more effective with your lead magnets. While your small business already has a niche audience, there are still different categories you can place your target audience in.

For example: A waxing salon may want to segment their audience into two groups: experienced waxers and first time waxers. The type of lead magnet you create for each of these groups will be vastly different.

For a first time waxer you might create a checklist or interactive quiz relating to if you are ready to get your first wax. An experienced waxer would not be interested in this, so you instead create a webinar about skincare tips for those who have been waxing for a while.

While both of these groups are a part of your niche target audience, segmenting them even further allows you to create lead magnets personalized to their needs – creating a higher probability that they will interact with it.
