The AIDA funnel marketing strategy is one of the most effective ways to attract new customers, and it is a simple strategy that anyone can implement.

The acronym stands for Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action—in other words, the steps (or funnel) a customer goes through from their first exposure to your product or service to their eventual purchase. The idea behind this strategy is to help potential customers move through the funnel with ease.

So how do you actually use this strategy? Let’s break down each step:

Attention: You need to get people’s attention so that they’ll engage with you. Give them something interesting or useful to read about your product or service—it could be an ebook or a blog post. The goal is to take someone who is unaware of your product or service and make them aware.

Interest: Once someone has read something about your company, they might be interested in learning more—so give them more! This could mean giving away free samples or offering discounts on products or services. The main goal of this step is to provide them with something of value in exchange for a way to communicate with them (i.e. an email address).

Desire: Now that they’ve got enough interest in what you offer and have seen some value in it, you have to create enough desire for a purchase. This could be a sales page or an email sequence. The main goal is to connect the dots for potential customers as to why your product or service is valuable and desirable to them. Depending on the tool you use in the interest section, you should have created enough desire to move them swiftly from this section to the last section – Action.

ActionThis is your final goal. A potential customer has moved through the funnel and are now ready to make a purchase. However, some small businesses might be able to funnel in potential customers just to blunder this last section. Checking out should be as simple as possible, because when customers are faced with difficulty they are more likely to give up and not follow through with a purchase. Ease of use is vital to score a sale.
