Emojis have become increasingly popular in the last 10 years, with 92% of the world’s online population using emojis.

In the past people advocated against using emojis in business marketing, deeming it inappropriate. However, over the years emojis have become a useful tool for small businesses to emphasize their communication with their customers.

When done right, emojis can help your business connect with your audience.

However – when done incorrectly, emojis can confuse your customers and turn them off to your brand.

So how do you know if you are using emojis correctly or incorrectly? Here are some tips on emoji use to help you up your emoji marketing game!

Where Should I Use Them?

Emojis are great for enhancing your emails, especially in the subject line of those emails. According to reports, 58% of consumers will open an email with an emoji in the subject line as opposed to one that does not.

Tip: Make sure you are using a reasonable amount of emojis. Too many emojis can land your email in spam jail.

Example:

Do this – Valentines Day Sale Starts Now ♥️

Not this – ♥️ Day 💲 Starts ⏳ ‼️🤑

Social media posts are an obvious choice for using emojis, and doing so can raise your engagement rates on EVERY platform. According to a Pew Research Center study, 57% of Facebook posts with emojis got more likes than posts without emojis, and 33% had more comments and shares. On Instagram, posts with emojis had 48% more engagement rates.

SMS / Text Marketing is another great opportunity to use emojis to strengthen your communication with consumers. Using emojis has shown to improve click-through rates, which will help lead to more sales. Again, this is another scenario where you want to make sure you are not over doing it. Too many emojis can turn people off to your messages and can even make you look tacky.

Tips For Using Emojis

DO NOT use emojis to replace words, but instead use them to add emphasis. Replacing words with emojis creates unnecessary problems, because you are leaving room for misinterpretation.

Steer clear of negative emojis, and stick to emojis that fit with your brand. You do not want past use of an emoji to later on have a negative effect on your brand. Sticking with emojis that fit your brand and that are positive will keep you from experiencing problems.
