The parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, recently released a new social media platform in the United States- Lemon8. With all the social media platforms already out there, another one may seem like too much to handle. Here’s everything you need to know about Lemon8 as a small business owner considering joining the platform.

What is Lemon8?

Lemon8 is NOT a new version of TikTok. The social media platform serves a completely different purpose and audience. This platform instead is a “lifestyle content community” that focuses on providing its users with the aesthetic feel of Pinterest with many of the features available on Instagram. This may remind users of the earlier days of Instagram.

Who Is On There?

While the app is the second most downloaded app in the lifestyle category of the Apple app store, ByteDance has been openly paying influencers to switch over and start using the Lemon8 social media platform. This means we are not sure how many people on the platform were paid to be there. This is important to keep in mind when deciding whether to add the platform to your social media marketing strategy.

Should I Be Using It?

Lemon8 has a very niche target audience: “22-26 year old females who are living in New York or Los Angeles, and are focused on beauty and fashion”. If this does not describe your target audience then there is no reason for your small business to be using the platform for marketing purposes. 

 

If you are a small business owner who is using social media to specifically sell your products, this might not be the platform for you. The platform actually discourages their users from selling on their platform. So if you are utilizing Lemon8 in your social media strategy know that you will not see direct sales coming in from this platform – at this time. This platform is a prime spot for companies focused on fashion and beauty to reach their target audience, so this might change with the platform’s growth.
