Google’s Search Generative Experience is the future of “googling”, changing the way people search for and find information. This in turn means that it will affect small business owners, who are looking to Google to help potential customers find their website. There are 3 key differences that distinguish SGE from how Google works now: concise AI response, carousel links, and improved search queries. Let’s talk about each one individually.

SGE Provides Concise AI Response:

“What the heck does that mean?” Let’s break it down. When using SGE, the results you receive will look a little different. Instead of showing you web pages with meta descriptions to help you pick a page to look at – Google will actually give you a response. Using AI, Google can give you a concise response to your question, as well as providing you with sources and websites to help you find more information.

This way you will get relevant and concise information without having to search through websites, but instead it simply appears on the search results page.

Carousel Links:

Not only will Google be providing you with a concise response to your question, it will also begin to display links in a carousel fashion. These links will include images, and likely be web pages that Google has deemed the most relevant for your search.

Why does this matter for small businesses? As a small business owner, you REALLY want your website to be displayed in one of these carousel links. This means providing clear and concise information that answers the question at hand, providing an image, and more.

Improved Search Queries:

Google is making changes to search queries and how it works. For one, there will be more wiggle room when it comes to explaining what type of information you are looking for.

“How many times have you had to re-search something because the first time around you got too many non relevant answers? You will no longer have to do this, but instead SGE will deduce what information you are looking for.

SGE will also allow for more a conversational interaction with users. What does this mean? You can now ask a “follow up” to your original search, instead of having to start over and get more specific.

Think of it like a chatbot. If I ask Chat GPT for a chicken recipe and it gives me 3 options, BUT then I decide that I want chicken recipes that have pasta in them – I simply say “only show me ones with pasta”. It remembers the original question. Google’s SGE feature will allow you to search in this way!
