Small Business Saturday is just weeks away, so we asked fellow S.O.B’s (small owned businesses) what their best piece of advice is for prepping for the day. To hear the full conversation and our added commentary, watch our podcast, the Small Owned Business (S.O.B.) Marketing podcast.
Rozabré from Sweet Rose Waxing Company: “You do not have to participate if you don’t want to.”
This is such an important piece of advice. There can be a lot of pressure to participate in all of these “shopping days” with sales and promotions – but there is no rule saying you cannot participate. If you feel as though you do not have the time or bandwidth to participate, your business wouldn’t get value out of participating, or you just do not want to run any promotions right now, then don’t! You became a small business owner to have the freedom to do what you want, so do just that.
JessC from Southern Curiosities: “Do not be afraid to keep it small. You do not have to go all out for the holidays. I offer free shipping on all online orders during that time.”
As a small business owner, it is likely your products take longer to create. It is important to know your worth. If your products take you hours to create and are made of expensive materials, it is just not feasible (or reasonable) to heavily discount them for the holidays. Keeping it small, like free shipping on online orders, can be a great way to incentivize someone who was on the edge of making a purchase.
Rae from The Design Demon: “It is okay if you do not make sales. Your success is not measured by how well a single sale does. Also, it may be helpful to focus on stocking stuffers. For me specifically, they are easier to assemble and easier to sell at a cheaper price.”
Two tips in one! It may be easier for you to move your smaller products because of a lower price point, if they would make good stocking stuffers. Consider creating products that are promoted as stocking stuffers for small business Saturday.
It is also very important to remember that sometimes marketing initiatives fall flat. It could be that your sale does not do well, but that is not indicative of your entire small business. Everything is simply data. Learn from the experience and grow because of it.
Small business Saturday can be a great business day for your small business – but do not put all your faith in this one sale. Instead, focus on the holiday season as a whole, so that you can make more sales and bring new customers into your community.
