As a small business owner, connecting with your local community successfully can have a huge impact on your success. Connecting with your community can be as simple as participating in a sponsorship. Sponsorships are powerful marketing tools for small businesses, they are cost effective, allow you to target your specific audience, and there are so many opportunities out there for sponsorships.

Targeting Your Audience

Sponsorships are a great way to reach your target audience, if you pick the right one. It is so important to pick sponsorships that your target audience will actually interact with.

Example: If you are a children’s clothing store, sponsoring a local elementary school in some way will get you in front of your target audience, parents. If you are a smoke shop – this is not the sponsorship for you. (Also not sure that an elementary school would accept that type of sponsor.)

Before you decide to participate in a sponsorship, also ask yourself: “Do I feel comfortable being associated with this business?” You are SPONSORING a business, which means you believe in what they are doing enough to give them money. If you do not agree with, or feel comfortable with some of the beliefs that business has – you do not want to sponsor them.

Cost Effective

Because sponsorships allow you to get specific in your audience, it can be a very cost effective marketing strategy. Not only that, but a majority of businesses and/or events that offer sponsorships will also offer a variety of budget options. This way you can participate no matter the budget you have as a small business.

Opportunities

There are more sponsorship opportunities out there than you think. Most local events will have sponsorship options available, as well as events hosted by your local Chamber of Commerce. Local sports teams also accept sponsorships, as well as schools. Grocery stores and pharmacies also offer sponsorship opportunities, however this is usually outsourced to a different company. Simply talk to a manager to get the contact information for whoever you need to talk to about sponsorship.
