Burnout. As a small business owner you are usually the sole person responsible for getting work done – but this can be a slippery slope for your mental health.

What Exactly is Burnout?

Burnout is defined by HelpGuide.org as “a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress”.

Let’s be honest – as a small business owner you are probably reading this saying “of course that’s me! I’m trying to run a small business,” and we get it. But burnout can affect not only your personal life and health, it can also affect your bottom line.

How Do I Avoid Burning Out?

If you feel as though the stress from running your small business is beginning to affect your mental health, then take a step back. Evaluate your responsibilities and see if there are ways to delegate some of these tasks to others. It is not wrong or bad to ask for help when you need it, and your mental health is more important than any singular task could be.

Pro tip: Hiring an outside company to handle a part of your business that they are pros in can not only help you from experiencing burnout – but it might be more profitable as well. Not having to spend time on that task means you have time to focus on other parts of your business that might need your attention to flourish and make money. Also, as pros they might know ways to help your small business save or make more money. Hiring an outside company can be profitable – just make sure you do your research.

Taking time for yourself is key. Planning a vacation during your off season, or simply taking a day or two off to enjoy your friends and family is a great way to combat the possibility of burnout.

A little stress is not bad, and as a small business owner it is unavoidable. When stress begins to manifest in unhealthy ways is when it is time to step back and see if you are experiencing burnout.
