As small business owners, we have somehow managed to become content creators as well. Social media marketing is a wonderful tool for growing your small business and increasing your brand’s presence – but it can be so difficult to come up with engaging ideas. However, when we turn to social media for a spark of inspiration, it can very quickly become a rabbit hole of comparisons and endless scrolling. Let’s discuss some ways small businesses can stop CONSUMING content and instead focus on CREATING content for their target audience.

Consider separating your professional and personal accounts.

This can be more difficult if you are a content creator – because your person is the complete brand. While you are most definitely the face behind the brand when it comes to your small business, you still have the ability to create separation between your personal and business life.

Action item: Create separate social media accounts for your small business. This way you can scroll through your business account looking for inspiration on creating content. Your personal account is for fun. It can also be helpful to give yourself a specific amount of time to scroll for inspiration. Setting an actual timer can help keep you to that set amount of time.

Is your phone actually helping you?

For a while I tried to use my Notes app to write down content ideas, or keep track of tasks I need to finish. However, whenever I picked up my phone to use my Notes app productively – I would get sidetracked on other apps. Switching to pencil and paper for brainstorming and to do lists can help you from falling down an endless scroll cycle. It can also be helpful to put your phone in a separate room while you are working.

Write it Down!

It can be so easy to forget an idea or a task that needs to be done. Write down any ideas you might have when it comes to creating content. It does not have to be a fleshed out idea, just writing down the concept can help. This way you are less likely to lose and forget about the idea. You also might be able to think of new ideas based on that one concept.

Creating to-do lists can also help you create content. Not only do lists help you organize your thoughts (making it easier to get tasks done), but marking a task off your to-do list can give you a little serotonin boost!

Chelsea Pro Tip: I personally find that I am more creative and can get more done when I rotate tasks. I give myself a set amount of time to work on a specific task. If I have not finished said task within the set amount of time, then I will move on to a different task. This gives my mind a break, so when I return to the original task I can look at it again with fresh ideas. It also helps me from becoming bored and distracted. This works for me, but some people find it incredibly difficult, and not at all helpful.
