Creating social media content is hard. As small business owners ourselves, Vivian and I can sometimes have trouble coming up with content ideas for our social media marketing. That’s why each month we try to share 3 content ideas for small businesses to consider. For February small business owners can try out the following social media content ideas: Lovey Dovey (Valentine’s Day) content, national celebrations, and collaborations.
Do I have to post about Valentine’s Day?
You are in charge of your small business, you do not have to do anything you don’t want to do (except pay taxes). Posting about the “lovey dovey” season is absolutely up to you – but it can be a great way to connect with your target audience.
This is the opportunity to share your products and/or services. It could be that you have seasonal merchandise you want to share with your target audience, or you could explain how your products/services would make wonderful gifts.
Southern Charm Candle created a Valentine’s Day gift guide featuring other small businesses, and teased it out to their followers on social media. There are sections for “her”, “him”, or “for the gals”. Not only does this get their target audience off of Instagram and onto their own website, but it also provides value to their consumers while still promoting their products.
National Celebrations as Social Media Content
There are plenty of national days and monthly celebrations for small businesses to use for their social media marketing. The key to using these national days is to make sure that the content makes sense for your small business. Sharing with your audience that it is Children’s Dental Health Month as a clothing boutique will likely not connect with your target audience – and will feel like a needless post. Social media is now about quality over quantity. Posting just to post something will not help you grow. If anything, it is more likely to hurt you.
Here are National months and days to post about in February:
- National Cancer Prevention Month
- National Embroidery Month
- National Weddings Month
- National Children’s Dental Health Month
- National Black History Month
- February 1 – National Dark Chocolate Day
- February 2 – National Groundhog Day
- February 3 – National Women Physicians Day
- February 4 – National Hemp Day
- February 6 – National Optimist Day
- February 9 – National Pizza Day
- February 13 – National Galentine’s Day
- February 14 – Valentine’s Day, National Organ Donor Day
- February 17 – Presidents Day
- February 19 – National Lash Day
- February 27 – National Anosmia Awareness Day
- February 28 – National Chocolate Souffle Day
What is a collaboration?
Collaborations can come in many different forms, but at the core it is simply when your small business works with another. This can be to create content, at a pop-up, to create a new product, etc. Collaborations allow you to maximize your social media reach, because you are not only tapping into your own followers but your collaborators following as well. It is a great way to grow your audience. It is also easier to do than people believe! Most small businesses would gladly collaborate with other businesses, since it is beneficial for everyone involved.
Another great example would be interviews, whether that is a podcast, radio, or for a magazine. This not only allows you to demonstrate your knowledge in your industry, but it is great content to share. You can easily share multiple clips from a podcast or radio interview.
Recently a member of our S.O.B. (Small Owned Business) Community was interviewed for a magazine! Rob from Black Circle Records was featured in the South Carolina Voyager as a local small business. He is currently sharing how people can find the article.
